Posters outlining student research are invited, on aspects related to modern coal operation. This competition is open to all students from all universities.

Poster topics

Surface mining, coal geology, headings development, mining methods, equipment performance and innovation, ground control and strata management, longwall and roof fall recovery, instrumentation and monitoring, rock bolting, cable bolting or other roof and wall support techniques, mine subsidence, mine ventilation, mine gas drainage, coal burst and outburst control, mine fires and explosions, mine flooding, risk management, mine management and mining contracts, coal preparation, tailings disposal, transport logistics, mine rehabilitation or environmental controls.

Poster format

Posters up to A1 size, (841x594 mm) will be accepted. Viewers should be able to read your poster from a distance of at least 1.5 metres. The poster needs to include a title, your name and the name of your research supervisor, in the top right hand corner.


The judging of up to ten posters selected as finalists will be by votes from the delegates of COAL2019 Coal Operators Conference. Should the number of votes be tied, the entrants will be declared equal 1st or 2nd place and the prize money shared. The preliminary judging to select the finalists will be conducted by a panel of three consisting of representatives from each University (UNSW and UOW) and a member of the organising committee. Entrants need to accept that the decisions of the judges and votes of the delegates are final and no discussion will be entered into with respect to the competition outcome.

Key Dates

Posters are to be submitted, addressed to: COAL2019 Student Poster Competition, Attention: Professor Naj Aziz, c/- Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences, Building 4, University of Wollongong, Northfields Avenue, Wollongong NSW 2522, to be received by no later than 5.00pm Friday, 8 February 2019. Alternatively, posters can be delivered to Engineering and Information Sciences Central, Ground floor, Building 4, University of Wollongong.

Preliminary judging will be held between Monday 11 February and Friday 15 February 2019.

The selected finalists will be displayed at COAL2019 Coal Operators Conference, with delegates voting on the Tuesday 19 February 2019.

The winners will be announced during the morning conference session on 20 February 2019.

Entrants are to collect their poster from University of Wollongong EIS Central, during the following 2 weeks, up until Friday 01 March 2019.
